BEST BOOK I'VE READ IN...AWHILE

On a lighter note, I've been munching my way through Rudy Rucker's THE WARE TETRALOGY.

This book has been seeping into my unconscious and conscious membranes like a leaking fluid. It is so insanely forward and yet so relevant to where we are heading in terms of interactive technology. It's just so...yes-weird. But so so good. I think the forward by William Gibson is best in describing it that it is a place he always feared of going. Or-that is how I read it. It reminds me of parts of Holy Fire by Bruce Sterling in terms of organic material being physical building blocks. In that novel it was actual structures-or how I remember it-but in Rucker's piece, the organic material is another being. A type of upgrade or fucking "app" if you will that is sentient and able to meld and coexist with the bi-pedal humanoid messes that we are. I get now how writers like Phillip K. Morgan went with the idea of downloading a consciousness and re-installing that into a clone body. Fascinating ideas and so refreshing and at the same time very unnerving. Unnerving only in the realm of thinking about our existence on your neighborhood X and Y axis. This book takes some "out of the box" reading.

It's just so good...not even the prose of it but the ideas put forth in such a bizarre and funny narrative. I want to liken it to Dick's sort of foresight but it is so much more than that. It isn't dated and I think the technology isn't that far off.

Ahhhhhh....could go on, but I won't. Read it. Enjoy

STOP THE ABUSE

After many hours of thought, I have to say something. I can't take it anymore. I don't care if this is a one-way forum. Why does it take a FOOTBALL coach being fired for a campus to riot? Are there not more important things to spur a riot, like say-student loans? Or, hey, one better-child rapists? What has happened to us as a species that we feel competition-based-industries trump the welfare of 10-year-old children at risk? What happened at Penn State has been happening for years in the Catholic church and religious institutions across the globe. In the end-people in power eventually feel the need to abuse it. The sad thing is that only now do most of us give a care because our top-10-B-C whatever is in danger of our favorite "coach" statue being the icon of sexual abuse. Joe Paterno knowingly let a cycle of abuse continue. He's not the first and won't be the last. So-what do we do from here? Maybe, when you see someone raping a child you go to the police and tell them what you saw? Maybe we all stop being so centered on our 1% or 99% or our facebook status that we take a look around, and reach out to those that are truly in need of some help-be it the abused or the abuser. At some point, we all have to reach a state of awareness that we move beyond our own needs and look at those of those around us. Yeah, some hippy-peace-nick-stuff: but COME ON PEOPLE-get a fucking grip. This week has been a revelation of pathetic action on all of our behalves. Whether it is pointing the finger or passing it onto the next, "larger" finger, we all lost something this week. I speak with a perspective that knows what a cyclical amount of abuse, violence, and argument can do to one's psyche. Stop the cycle. Take action and stop pointing the finger.

In a way that a child never thinks that school will ever come again, Christmas day will never end, birthday celebrations will live on forever...I thought my grandfather would live on past all of these and more. I guess at 97 you can't ask for much more than relinquishing a driver's license and not renewing your accounting permit.

It wasn't much more than a week ago that I was at the dentist where my grandfather had his dental work done and I was commenting to the dentist about how my gramps was a robot. He's got the genes, the mentality...and then poof-it's all gone. At a dinner-moment on tour with his beloved Salem Singers Francis Wonderly said stop. And that's it.

In a tangent world, that's what I believe. That he actually pushed a button and said: "STOP." That's the power that I thought he had. Maybe he was too long without his Madel and it was too much. In the end, I guess it was just Francis. He made a journey back to Lancaster, PA where many of the Wunderlichs of this world came through and maybe he thought it was a good place to put the book-marker down for good.

In an email tonight, my mom said it best-"I do okay until night hits and then I start thinking about never having a chat with FLW again..."

That's how I'll go to sleep tonight, knowing that the small notes are gone, but at least I have the moments to keep me.

20K dream with Cary Grant

The other night I had a dream. Friends came over for a dinner party and left a house-warming gift. A ragged, old, oil painting from Good Will. I stared at it for what seemed eons, and then scrawled upon it with paint and turpentine and basic Art-Fuckery. About a year later (within the dream), Cary Grant showed his gnarled face at my domicile and entered. He looked at the paintings I've done-things of time and artistry-and said "These are good, but I like THAT ONE." The one to which he referred was the Good-Will painting. He asked me what I "wanted" for it. I said $20,000. I was joking. He complied and ran off down the street with painting in tow and $20k in my hand. As he was leaving, he left on a Rose-Parade-float with a woman dressed as a butterfly flapping her legs as a goodbye. There was someone at my side as we watched the exiting share-holder in Wonderly Imaging and all he said was, "well, look at that."

I awoke and stared into the Oregon sunrise and then realized I was once again in Brooklyn, NY. Then I remembered the dream and wondered where Cary Grant was. His elusive eyes, eyeing the prize of my house guests' gift, forever scribed with a danbot's hand. He left on a cheap note of $20,000.

If that's all I ever walk away with is a 20k dream of Cary Grant and thrift-shop paintings then I think I can die happy.

In the meantime, check out the new Portals: Dumbo 2011 series next week thanks to DUMBO ARTS FESTIVAL. It's the 23rd-25th.

Just finished reading the The Three Stigmatas of Palmer Eldritch (Phillip K. Dick) and it completely blew my mind. Whooooaaaa DDDDUUuuuude....not in that sense, but really-every time I read a "Dick" novel I'm astounded by the relevance.

Relevance to the time and to how far below the bar we have come as a species. The guy was pretty crazy but pretty much predicted the downfall/fragility of the human kind. Read the book and get out of your space. Literally. I'm pretty sure that he and Donald Trump have caroused in some kind of space-drug-infused-time-portal at some point.

RICHARD K. MORGAN

Not sure if I've mentioned before, but CHECK OUT-RICHARD K. MORGAN.

Altered Carbon was the first novel of his I read, but am now finishing Thirteen and am convinced that this guy is the next wave of sci-fi lit.

Thirteen is deep in it's politics and riveting in its action. Love the depth that he goes into the future. Genetics, genetics, and the secession of the USA. Almost scary in his depiction of 100 or so years from now but Thirteen is really one of the more realistic looks at what might be given our current pace here in the states.

Check it out-a good read for non-sci-fi-nuts and crime-novel enthusiasts alike.

So while I'm on the musical endorsement trip, I'd like to also say a word about Morphine.

Boston based and simple, strategic music built upon fragmented poems more than lyrics. Morphine was the product of Mark Sandman, Billy Conway, and Dana Colley...with Jerome Dupree starting things out in the beginning with GOOD. I had the chance to see these guy and meet Sandman at a festival in the midwest and it was one of the better live performances I've ever seen.

When THE NIGHT came out I was floored. It seemed like all of the prior albums had finally culminated in a devastatingly mellow blow. You could almost hear the fair-well in Sandman's voice and it was a sad day when he passed. It always struck me as odd that the album always had innate vigor spliced with a certain melancholy waiting on an impending end.

I still listen to THE NIGHT and always get some goose bumps.

It's all about soundscapes and how these artists make one imagine a different world, much like writers do. It is the non-visual realms that always have this lasting, endearing impact. They make you conjure up your own identity to their work because you automatically create a visual landscape in your mind. It is a narrative necessity.

Mark Sandman was able to do that in his music. It was always a pretty simple theme, but the beat and the melody always went a little bit further...

So, I'm a bit of a nostalgic and was trolling through my music and---wait a second, I just got held up at gun point and---wait a second, oh yeah that's right, I was actually just listening to...

Everclear.

I think there should be some kind of discussion about this. Starting with...I was on a flight from Portland OR circa 1995 1/5 with my companero from high school (Kyle Ferrill) and we had spent a week in the Northwest flying back to Indiana. We'd been reading SPIN magazine and talking about the state of music as we were prone, and there happened to be an article about Everclear. Basically, in the interview in SPIN, Art Alexakis was listening to a Pixies single and it inspired him to go make music-back when making music took a band and some effort instead of opening up an application on the old computadore-

Short end of the story is that Kyle and I listened to Sparkle and Fade after spending a week in the NW and had a bit of an affinity for the album...I think Kyle purchased the Presidents of the United States album and we were wanting the kitty to touch it?

A decade has past and I found myself Itune-ing my way through Sparkle and Fade. The fact that there is a wikipedia entry for the album is enough said.

So I've had the chance recently to work on a project called: COYOTE PURSUES.

My cousin, Matt Reeck, approached me about 4 months ago regarding a series of vignettes that he wanted to illustrate. This led him to Deborah Simon, who is a sculptor, and has created a pair of coyotes for the Coyote Pursues vignette that will be performed in June at St. Ann's in June of 2010. My involvement for the project is providing the video/rear-projection for the piece in which the coyotes will maneuver through the piece.

So, here is the link for COYOTE PURSUES. This is the temporary housing for some of the informational aspects of the project and will be updated in the near future with video content that I am currently editing.

Kansas and the whole problem of taking a bad picture

On a recent trip to Kansas doing some video work, I was thrown out of the car and happened to land in the middle of the road and press the shutter concurrently. The result was pretty amazing. It reminded me that it is hard to take a bad picture when in such an amazing landscape.

O.D.NW.CA= Old Dirty NorthWest/California

Just finished a tour on the "left" coast and realized why it is so awesome. Basically because it smells better and people sometimes say, "no worries" instead of shoulder checking you into a subway-platform pylon. I enjoy the shoulder checking, mainly because I have a lot of un-checked aggression when it comes to people that disrespect common courtesy.

Oh yeah-back to the main point-the trip!

Took some shots on the beach and caught up with the dogs on the farm. Those are some whhhet bastards but they are fucking cute and loyal. Unfortunately they were not out of their pen when some rather adventurous Mormons came calling on the Wonderly estate on a dark/creepy/nwnight. Too bad. Maybe the dags would have uncovered the mystery over the blessed underwear of Mormonology.

Just amazing country and it does smell delicious-and I miss it all with a voracious, shoulder-checking abundance!

Until then-New York is cold and amazing...for cold balls.

R.I.P. DEKKER

While away on a trip over the holiday I learned that Nick Dekker had passed. It's funny how the years slide and age takes precedence. Nick was one my first teachers at Brooks and I just remember that he was kind of grumpy and yet an amazing asset in the darkroom. I related to him. He was at Brooks for EONS. Having the opportunity to sift through his prints and plates coupled with his printing advice at school was almost worth the ulcer of student debt. I just wish that the end for him wouldn't have been so bitter. You spend 30 years somewhere and passing knowledge and getting grumpy and at the same time imparting wisdom to countless individuals who have gone to great careers. And what do you get for those 30 years? A cold hard shaft in the ass because you are "outdated" and a medical expense to a corporation bent on Super-sizing education. That's my knowledge and my take of how Nick came to pass so quickly. I think he was forced out of education and out of a benefits package that he deserved and then he went to the Midwest and died. I'm not saying the institution is responsible for his death, but I think he probably had some years left that might have been better served in California. Ho Hum.

We always need someone to blame huh? I'm in darkrooms quite a bit these days sorting old memories and new, printing, developing, dismantling and getting a paycheck. Every time I am in there I cycle through the platform of my darkroom gods and Nick is among one of those. I think about how it is 2010 and how no one turns off the lights anymore in order to see the "ultimate" light. HA! All we do now is turn on the mac chime or the Gateswindow and fire up the Adobe enlarger. The only smell I have emanating from my modern dark room is a thirsty printer from Epson that makes me grab my ankles every now and then. I never do that in the AGNO3 darkroom unless it is to take care of some serious lunging.

So, with that said, I raise my glass to Dr. Dekker and hope that at some point all the tables equal out and CEC gets theirs and the darkroom comes back around. In the meantime, let's all have an hour of silence in the dark with the only sound being that of the credit card companies and student loan corporations quietly tugging at our souls----AAARRRRRGGGGHHHHH!

SOME GOOD BOOKS

Let's face it, aside from music, the only other sensory input that can compare is a good book. Well, maybe the occasional physical stimulant but that can get messy and illegal in a hurry. Books are something that demand you create a complete visual narrative in your mind without any illustrations-unless you are reading the only version of the bible that I enjoy (the one with pictures.) It is also something that, if you are like me, may take a month or six to finish. With that kind of duration, I develop these epic visual sequences and environments in my mind that stay with me each time I dip back into a particular book. ***Disclamer Levar Burton and the Reading Rainbow theme song are going to pop out any moment and children will be prancing all around you as Pizza Hut offers you BOOK-IT coupons for personal pan pies!***

So with that endorsement here are my top-three-books-list at this point in my life, and after that are two of the most recent ones I have read.

Most recent read and one I recommend- The Night of the Gun by David Carr
This is a memoir - or Mhemwha if you are into the whole Burn After Reading thing - that is up in your shit. I'm not sure how to describe it other than an almost narcissistic view into the life of David Carr. And with that said it is a pretty good ride. I don't go in for the whole Memoir thing and less so with the whole junkie mhemwha, but this one kicks ass. It makes you think about MEMORY. And if you've ever been around any of the stuff he talks about it makes it all the more impactful.

Second most recent read: The Book of Dave by Will Self
This is a post/present apocalyptic book about a cabbie in London. That is about all I can say...you just have to read it. The visual landscape from reading this is still in mind and will be for a while.

So, a death was recently brought to my attention. A certain Dash Snow was found dead in an nyc hotel this last week. I had not known of his work or existence before this article was brought to my attention but it stirred something in the Wonderly works that encouraged me to write a post.

Apparently Mr. Snow had been an influential "artist" due to his contributions within collage and photography and whatever else. I don't mean to be flippant as I know none of his work or life but it just makes me sad that press surrounding a creative passing has to deal with DRUGS. That's right--pick your poison but it seems cool these days to die from it. So, shoot-em up and you'll be the next talked about he-was-too-young-too-die-too-talented-art-fucker-to-die-this-year-oh-let's-praise-their-work! YAY!

Why is it that creative minded weirdos are akin to the chemical imbalance? I'm pretty sure that wasn't what was going on with the subject of this post but let's get outside of the hype and look at a mirroring topic that deserves some light: are you high when you create or do you create because you are high? I'm not sure what the case was with Mr. Dash but aren't we over this process yet? When was the last time your favorite painter died because of old age or cancer or maybe a run-in with the bus? Maybe that question can be answered more quickly than would serve the purpose of this rant, but really--come on guys. I'm not a stranger to altered states of weirdness but in these said "states" I have rarely produced anything that I would deem worthy.

I guess my point is that why is Mr. Snow famous? Why is he important? Is it because he created worthy imagery that is moving the proverbial mountain or is it because he was a new yorker that O-D-d for__fill in your blank of child-hood pain/artistic quandary?

I guess I'm just a little miffed that I hear about some "great" artist's death only because of HOW they died. Did their work merit such coverage or even praise? These are questions, not judgment as I'll be the last one to step upon the soapbox of moderation.

When are we going to hear about a great show because the work is truly unique and original? At what point will there emerge a methodology that is based upon talent as opposed to requiem or cash?

Vincent Van Gogh was clinically insane and produced paintings that are regarded as impenetrable works of genius because he was an "insane" artist. He didn't have a trust fund or other options other than excising the imagery in his mind. That is the definition of art and the artist. With that said, when did praise for art come in the form of overdose? We're all in pain in some way or another but as an addict you choose to deal with it or die.

Mr. Snow--R.I.P. I feel immense sorrow for your family and loved ones; but, in the end, you are a selfish person who has emblazened the concept of art and the tragedy of soul. The fact remains that it was probably neither sadness or talent that made you a junkie. And in that extension of thought, the depression and addiction probably did not make you a better artist or an artist at all.

But hey-who am I to judge-I'm not in the times or heard about through a friend of a friend of a friend, so what am I worth?

Maybe I just need an interesting drug habit?

For no reason in particular, I watched an odd series of movies about a week ago and thought that it might be a nice post-halloween post.

1. Midnight Meat Train
2. Hard Candy
3. Rosemary's Baby
4. Hellboy II, The Golden Army

Now, aside from maybe the last title, you might be wondering about my sanity and/or psychic state of mind. Let me explain: when my girlfriend and I went to see the latest X-files movie one of the previews in the theater was for Midnight Meat Train. After the preview was finished we both turned to one another and just started laughing. Not only is the title rather, um, suggestive but the actual sequences looked completely ridiculous. Needless to say when we found this on inDemand, we indulged our base curiosities and viewed. And...all I have to say is Midnight Meat Train! And, a ridiculous photographer who ends up eating people.

With this segue, we move onto Hard Candy. Starting out with another douche bag phucktographer who is trolling the chatrooms for underage "models." The story is in general pretty disturbing and I guess I'm not sure what I was expecting. Ellen Paige turned in a believeable and fairly demanding performance. Aside from that, I'm still not sure why this movie followed the Meat Train but it is safe to say that dreamland was a little more than disturbing that night.

So, what better way to sooth the subconscious but by watching Rosemary's Baby. Right. I had never seen this film before and when I brought it home I received some very confused looks from both of my cats and girlfriend. I had no idea what the movie was about. I had watched the Ninth Gate but only knew of Roman Polanski's status as a fugitive from America and in another twisted tangent the weekend of movies kept connecting. I thought Rosemary's Baby was great. It is completely twisted but I guess that happens when you put into play the Polanski factor, and the whole element of Satan raping Rosemary and in turn her birthing devil-spawn. The cinematography was amazing.

The quest for Hellboy II at the video store initiated all of this moviewatching to begin with and so it was fitting that it rounded off our psycotic viewing weekend.

What can I say? The creatures were amazing and Del Toro's detail was everywhere. There were complaints from many patrons that the movie was cheesy and to this and any other critic of a movie based on a comic book, it's derivative of a comic book. The script was co-written by the creator of Hellboy, so what were you expecting?

After this round of films I'll be renting only romantic comedies for the next six months to try and soften the blow to my nightmares.

Check out Hellboy II and Rosemary's baby if you haven't already, and the other two can remain possibly forever acumulating dust in the discount bin.

SUMMER MOVIES

So a quick suggestion regarding the July movie frenzy: maybe rent a complete season of the X-files until the most recent cinematic release comes out on DVD. This hurts to say so, but at the same time there is that weird psyco-melodramatic-fan-loyalty of pop culuture that says, NOOOOO! And more importantly, WHHYYY? And probably most importantly, does David Duchovny really have a two-tone-beard? Weird. And maybe not in the best kind of weird, the weird that made the X-files so good for so long. Alas.....

In a similar vein, Richard Kelley's Southland Tales, was somewhat of a similar question raiser in terms of the direction of it's "director" but still piping hot on the weirdness scale. I hate to venture much further in an analysis of the film as it is still a venture into further portal/time splitting as Donnie Darko was, but it seems that Southland was more of an homage to Los Angeles and in a weird way to Dwayne Johnson. I'm not really sure what to say about Tales, but maybe it needs some more time or another viewing. And although I agree that the end of the world may originate in Southern California (and this is not altogether a bad thing), let's maybe not overlook the Bermuda triangle as a historically proven nexus of the fourth dimension.

Although I still need to do the Batman and Hellboy romp this summer, I will recommend very highly a movie that kicks X-files and Southland Tales in the dimensional nuts: The Adventures of Buckaroo Bonzai Across the 8th Dimension. Peter Weir stars as Buckaroo Bonzai while cavorting through the 8th dimension, and encounters, basically some really weird, um, everything. Watch this and love it. The only thing I can say in comparison to this summer's films and Bonzai, let's hope that old trundle--"hey let's remake the remake of the script that was about the remake"-wood will leave this story alone and not dredge it out of retirement for an embarassing and disappointing reunion tour. It isn't always fun to see your most favored cinematic memories dragged behind the bumper of a car on a road full of broken glass.

(Also check out Tarkovsky's origional, Solyaris, and enjoy more dimensional space madness as well as some of the best cinematography around...even though I love Schizopolis, maybe Soderbergh lost his mind a little from Schiz that he thought remaking Solaris was a good idea...come on guys!)

Welcome back and greetings. Spring is upon us and there is a stir in the air. Gas prices are at an all time high, credit card companies are under investigation, and there are undercurrents in the Wonderly World.

It looks like there will be a legitimate showing of danbot paintings in July at Splashlight Studios!

Yes, as promised, I have been working ever so diligently on a series of paintings that I am loosely calling "Chaos Maps."

This comes after a year of riding the rails in New York City (ps, they still make Pace Pecante in El Paso, for all those inquiring) and gazing upon the multitude of floor patterns and dried gum droppings that exist on and off the rails of the city. Two hours of my day is spent upon this nerve center of Gotham and I've been sketching off and on during this time. The result is an exegesis of disgruntled paint. I decided upon oils and canvas because quite frankly I am disenchanted with the medium of photography and wanted to get some things out on canvas.

Just a quick update regarding some new images from ISO 3000 and the site release of The Bull on the Moon Studios.

ISO 3000, aka Nicholas Mah, has been time traveling again and recently posted some noteworthy stuff on his site.

CASTOR AND POLLUX

Greetings once again as the wind marches and brings with it an expensive line of prostitutes for one former governor of New York. What to do with $80,000 is the question hot on every young boy and girl's mind, and I guess the most logical thing would be to spend that on hookers. Right.

I'll leave that one there as I ponder the magnificent bills I could pay with 80k.

On a much more fulfilling level, let's travel down the mythology mainframe in search of some fable.

Castor and Pollux: the twins who represent the Gemini constellation and play part god and part mortal at alternate times throughout the year. These two brothers have always been a part of the Wonderly World and I thought it might be a good year to spotlight their twin-like behavior.

Ray Caesar is a digital artist who has represented Castor and Pollux in a digital construct. Please venture to Ray's website to check out the brothers along with his new work. You should also read Dr. Caesar's bio and experiences where he describes how, "...much to my parents surprise, I was born a dog." That might not make much sense right now, but it will if you go to raycaesar.com.

So, in salute to Castor, Pollux, and Ray Caesar I will return to the earth bound half of the Wonderly World.

Mystical Broncos Reunion 2008

Last week there was a full moon and chortling bronco breath in the air as a Mariachi Bronco came in from the south land of Mexico City. Dr. Roberto Khalil made a short but inspiring appearance en route to London. This was the first time in two years that the Mystical Bronco trio has been reunited. Dr. Robert Malmberg captured this one between the mayhem....

Although a short visit, it was not devoid of inspiration as the lecturing Tazmanian-mariachi commented upon all types of current dimensions. Most prominent in these discussions was that of the labyrinth. The construct of a module or forum constructed out of a layered set of systems with which to view and discuss different "art." Thanks for the further thought provoking material as we wade through the bog. Keep an eye out for The Bull On the Moon Studios starting up in London this year as Roberto and Pedro Gutierez begin their conquest.

In accordance with the Mystical Broncos being reunited, I had the opportunity to watch a couple of movies by Alejandro Jodoworsky. Wow. If you go in for that kind of Cremaster/Matthew Barney type of allegory and borderline nightmare type of film-making, then Jodoworsky is for you.

I also watched David Cronenburg's, Videodrome for the first time as well. This fully reaffirms Cronenburg's evidence as a true cinematic genius. From the time when it was made, to the present state of TV, video, film, and the multimedia plaster blaster, Videodrome is a jarring slant on "changing the program."

Check em out and get a pleasant jolt of unpleasant imagery. Or get an unpleasant jolt of pleasant imagery...you decide!

The 30th Year

Happy New Year.

With the start of 2008, the Wonderly World enters its 30th year in existence. So, if around the end of May a black hole opens up and swallows you while crossing the street, enjoy the ride and know that the legends and fables of the Orangehorse and all the blabbering stories of the last 30 are there to guide you. In short, this should be an interesting year in an experiment that began in the southern hemisphere three decades ago.

In news, there was a whirlwind of family visiting for the holidays, so not much image-making has been happening.

The following pics are of two of my favorite canines. The first, Dr. Earl, is a long time friend of mine and of the Wonderly World. Earl hails from Redhook after a daring rescue by the nofsheehan-team. I met Earl in 2004, I think, and we were fast friends. This first portrait is from 2004 and the next is from a couple of weeks ago as the good Doctor was leading a sledding expedition in Vermont.

Next on the road of canine visits was a very energetic young pup named Flash. There isn't much to say about the old boy, other than his bark is like a doped up Olympic athlete. Don't let the beat-neck-ivy-league-sweater fool you. This dog was made for barkin!

Well, in reflection upon 2007, there were many interesting points that could be elucidated upon and further explored, but the dogs are more entertaining. So, keep checking back as the subconcious gets plugged, uplugged, and unfurled as I search for the inter-dimensional ship that brought me here 30 years ago. And if we're lucky, maybe there will be enough room on board for all of us!

Grandma Madell

Sorry it has been such a distance between this and my last post. Many things have been happening and the most impactful was the the death of my grandmother on Thanksgiving. Madell Wonderly was almost 95 when she passed. I was actually in an airplane on my way to see her when she died. Madell was a weird one as well, and one of the biggest jokers I've ever met. I will miss her and she will be greatly missed.

Here is a portrait of Madell I was able to coax out of her about a year ago.

Well, it is that time again, for the danbot to unleash. This past week I have been traversing multi dimensions, and pondering the past. I've come up with three future-posts: 1. ode to SCHEME HOUSE 2. Subway rides, and 3. "ode to grandparents."

That's all I've got.

In the meantime, Drexciya has been on my playlist of life after reading the WIRE's article on the UR. Underground Resistance. This is the only link that is valid after reading WIRE's article. It is the only source that I have come across after a very late discovery of UR's existence and its outlying entangents. I highly recommend all UR recordings if one is into Detroit techno. I feel like somewhat of a fraud in even mentioning either one of these entities, but that is why I get the magazine. There is always something new (with great photography and writing) that blows my mind. In this case, Drexciya. In the past the Ramellzee. CloudDead anyone?

As for this week's blah blah blah blog, I am still recovering from last week's downfall of analog. I actually printed some stuff from the Oregon farm and was somewhat rejuvinated and have been re shooting some images shot digitally for an upcoming submission to Black and White Magazine. Just trying to get back to film and create a series solely created on celluloid. Monochromatic.
Aside from that, I have been painting as promised and venturing into the past to find inspiration. Apparently Jackson Pollack painted in fractals. An interesting article on Pollack and fractals is linked here: fractal science pollack. Not saying that I will be splattering paint on passing cars from the fourth floor (one could only hope) but I have always been scribbling in very erratic meanderings without much avail. It just makes sense when you tear open a new seam in the cavas or sketchbook or subway wall. I don't really know if the spirit of god or some other dead poet will incline my brush, but I hope that the next series can fill an order of 10 to 12. I keep riding the subway (out of necessity and negligence) and am coming up with some themes that seem to be recurrent. Teeth, eyes, stairways, doors, and mangled fingers. Fun stuff, but it seems it is all that my unconscious can muster these days or the past 22 for that matter. Maybe some portraits will be next, or maybe some Bob Ross happy trees...anyway, this pony is spent.

So today I received some bad news. The analog is dead. Yep, the corporation won. We are now living in a digital age. CEC corporation, owners of Brooks Institute of Photography, put to rest one of the more prestigious living comrades of silver and platinum. I feel I'm safe in saying, (more because no one reads these blogs), that those of us hoping for an analog revolution can put the wait/weight back upon our shoulders. The last of our institutionalized brothers received their walking papers this week. Give it up to the digital age or give it up to a sign of the times. Give it up to the powers-that-be that they figured out a way to make more money than the corner store deli.

We all saw this coming, are we really surprised?

Not really, just hurt in a really sad and narcissistic way. Everyone wants the underdog to win. The masses need a martyr. But, in the reality of it all, this isn't the case. Everyone points out to their grandmother, "isn't that black and white photograph so nice, doesn't it capture everything you had hoped for?" Yeah, some have heard it, and probably more of us have belived it. But it's easy--desaturate--psd filter/black/and/white--choose your filter--let the 1's and 0's process. Ohhhhhhhhhhh, it is so beautiful. Yeah, in a sick and ignorant way, it is.

But, for those of us that still have a remembrance of the chemical embrace, it is something much more than that. I could go into a long and very dilluted pontification about how color inhibits our sense of beauty. I could keep spewing for days how we all took our first negatives with a pentax/nikon/canon/widelux/rollei/holga/hasselblad camera. We could all go into detail about how we went to pain-staking processes to manually manipulate our film with chemicals and darkness. We could all go on for days about the infinite hours spent perfecting that one print that meant so much. We could all go on, and we will: basically, because we are arrogant bastards that believe in the power of film.

Black and white, color, transparency, inter-dimensional it is all the same. Film is the analog to the digital. The grain to the pixel. Ahhh, the war wages on. The crux to remember is that there would not be a pixel or a "digital neg" without the halide. So, in closing, fuck you to the digital realm (although I love that sweet refine edges menu so much). Fuck you to the corporations and curriculum that believe in cost effective conglomeration. We'll die owing you thousands, but we'll still have our silver. Arrrgh.

So, in the end, I am sorry that today I sign off by saying goodbye to an institution of knowledge that matriculated itself in the form of Nick Dekker. After 32 years of service, it is a shame that money plays a part, but we will always hand our hats off to your forthright knowledge of persistance.

It is funny that in writing this, I remember Bob Smith, the first to fall to the ax. I remember when they "laid him off" and I was like...are they really going to leave this in the hands of Broughton? At least some soldier is left. Fuck. (all of the stuff on the links page is not really representative--as is the same with Dekker's page--the best is in person or viewing the prints in hand) Right. To have learned from this is gold, and now we wallow in a sea of really sad, whiskey-drinking mourn. That's all I have to describe it. All else would be SMS texting someone or emailing or basically falling prey to what it is that has killed our sages.

I ramble on, and with good intention. So, light a candle for your favorite fallen. Or just fire up your photoshop version and hope that the inks can help ease the pain.

Regardless, the next time the moon isn't out, or a streetlamp does not light your path, close your eyes and remember what it was like to figure something out in the dark.

Wonderly Imaging Makeover

I finally finished a new version of Wonderly Imaging that should be a bit more direct in navigation and accessibility. Included in the navigation are links to my black and white-silver work, paintings, wonderly links, and archive sites since starting Wonderly Imaging.

There is also a Recent work portfolio that I'll try and keep up to date with more imagery as it comes.

So, enjoy and send me some feedback or comments on the imagery and layout.
